    Item Code: #9788176223409

    Availability: In stock

Agriculture once considered as a noble profession, now is largely being perceived as disillusionment by the farming community. No doubt the production has increased, but it has cost us heavily. The productivity at the demonstration plots of research institutes is good; but in farmer s field, story is something different. Still we have not been able to come up with the extreme poverty and hunger. A series of reports after reports have highlighted the tragic facts about these vital indicators. The latest is the report of the International Food Policy Research Institute; the Global Hunger Index 2014. While progress has been made; but many countries still fall in alarming to extremely alarming category. India s hunger status is still classified in the serious category. The present book is an endaveour to present various challenges that confront the agricultural sector in general and to India in particular. The book dwells at length the fate of the farmer over the years, the story of grain drain, the minimum support prices, the agriculture subsidies, declining share of investment in agriculture, the land use dynamics, declining size of operational holdings, low level of farm mechanization and low level of food processing. The book discusses at length the importance of the rainfed agriculture in the global as well as national economy, the constraints in this handicapped zone and the strategies for overcoming the constraints. Public distribution system and extension services have come under serious attack. The book also presents some alternatives for the Public distribution system and how the extension services can be revitalized; how the paradigm has changed to rope in the private players and building partnerships to provide the extension services to the farmers. The book also contains an appraisal of how agriculture affects climate and in turn is itself affected by it and how can we cope with the changing climate. Sustainability today is the need and cry of the hour. Over the years various agricultural practices have made the sector highly unsustainable. The book also summarizes how the crisis of the agriculture can be contained by different approaches along with some out of box solutions. To conclude the book depicts a comprehensive picture of the state of agriculture and will serve as a useful guide for the students, researchers, teachers, policy makers and planners and the extension professionals.

This book contains the very valuable resources concerning the great scope of raising management efficiency and economic performance through timely adoption of Poultry rearing technology. Poultry is the only sector in agriculture steadily growing at a healthy rate of 7-8 per cent in layers and 15 per cent in broiler since last 2 decades (Gupta, 2004). The per capita availability in India has increased to about 42 eggs and 1.6 kg poultry meat. The recommended per capita consumption of our Nutritional Board of 180 eggs and 9 kg meat, India, with a population of 1.02 billion is considered by the world to be at threshold stage and move up in World Poultry map and occupy the top position in coming years (Anon., 2005). Various researchers reported that with the timely adoption of scientific technology, it is possible to convert even backward farmers into economically viable units. Thus, timely adoption of scientific technology plays significant role in making farmers economically advanced.

This book reveals the application of a new and innovative concept called ptilochronology to study the sexual behavior of birds specially Japanese Quail. Ptilochronology is an interesting tool by which feather growth can be measured. The idea of ptilochronology was first introduced by Grubb in 1989. It is a growing branch of ornithology which opens ways to a number of areas such as avian behavior, ecology, conservation biology and remains a lot to do. This is the first study on this subject in the country.
Our aim is to share this innovative technique with the developing researchers in science and veterinary science, a new concept with the students, an interesting idea with the students, an interesting idea with the bird lovers, bird watchers and knowledge with the other readers. As you will read this book, you will learn how to use the technique.

Supply chain management in agribusiness has the potential to strengthen the traditional agricultural marketing channels of developing countries to come at par with modern sophisticated chains of developed counries. This will facilitate farmers of developing countries to compete in modern consumer driven market and have maximum share of the growing food markets not only in their own country but of the entire world. All these might lead to quality improvement in the life of farmers. At the same time urban residents can also get timely and quality food supply and all at low price. However, there are not enough literatures that can be drawn on the subject matter. In the absence of a clear unanimous perception on the status of agribusiness in terms of both backward and forward linkage etc., the formulation of policy, strategies, programmes and schemes relating to agribusiness becomes difficult. The present book is humble attempt to analyze both economic and social aspects of the agricultural supply chains including the information aspect. The study presented in this book initially tries to find out and map the supply chain networks of selected high-value agricultural commodities. After that, it attempts to study and analyze the supply chains over three critical dimensions- product flow dimension, relationship dimension and information flow dimension. The book has been arranged in twelve chapters. Since the concept of agribusiness supply chain management is still in nascent stage, this book hoped to supplement the economic aspect of the agriculture supply chains with social aspect and information aspect and thus provide more insight enabling better understanding of the agriculture supply chains and thus, add to the developing theory of agribusiness supply chain management. This book shall be useful for the academicians, researchers and students of economics, management, agricultural marketing etc. This book shall also be useful to the policy makers, planners, practitioners and all those who are interested in welfare of the farmers as well as consumers and strengthening of the overall agricultural marketing and agribusiness supply chain system.

  • Handbook For The Identification Of Insects Of Medical Importance

    John Smart

    Item Code: #9788176220811

    Availability: In stock

The book deals with the identification of old world arthropods of known medical importance. New world species have been excluded except when for the shake of completeness passing reference is made to some particularly important species which should be within the general knowledge of anyone interested in the subject of medical entomology. Quantitative analyses of insect populations and their impact on man have led the medical entomologists into the field of epidemiology, and he may therefore be regarded as taking in this particular sphere, a part in the development of preventive medicine. The work has been undertaken by the author, who has been at pains to limit his text to matter which is essential to the accurate determination of the species, and a bare mention of the diseases with which they are associated. Every effort has also been made to present the subject in the simplest possible way. However, certain general aspects of the subject are outlined briefly and wherever possible fully labelled figures have been interested in the text to provide information on the morphology of the more important insects and other arthropods discussed. The days of agricultural expansion are over, and population of the earth increases day by day. If we are to feed and cloth everybody, it is clear that the productivity of the land must be increased, not just maintained. The maintenance of soil is not so glamorous as the doubling of yield. It is purpose of this book to provide a clear picture of the fundamental nature and cause of soil erosion, of the aims of soil conservation, and of the methods of saving the soil and of maintaining its productivity. For this reason soil conservation has not always received the attention it deserves. It is the purpose of the book to give recipes for soil management, but to help the reader to understand the soil and what happens to it under various forms of land use, so that he himself can work out the solution of any soil-conservation problem. This book has been written primarily as a college text and will be useful to anyone active in soil-conservation work. Contents Chapter 1: Soil Conservation as a Problem of Humanity; Chapter 2: The Soil; Chapter 3: Soil Erosion; Chapter 4: Aims and Principles of Soil Conservation; Chapter 5: Methods of Soil Conservation; Chapter 6: Special Soil-Conservation Problems; Chapter 7: Economics of Soil Conservation; Chapter 8: Farm Planning for Soil Conservation; Chapter 9: The Future of Land Management.

It is evident from recent events that this country will in the future have to be more self-supporting in all agricultural products than it has been in the past. While the milk industry in recent years, thanks to the application of science and a body of progressive producers, guided by the Milk Marketing Board, has been able to lift production considerably, the same cannot be said of the beef industry. The methods now employed in milk production are very different from those which existed fifty years ago, but the methods employed in beef production have shown little change during this period. In this book author has attempt to focus attention on some of the problems of beef production which will have to be solved before it regains its position in the economy of British agriculture. All may not agree with the solutions he offers to these various problems, but the problems have been put, and if one does not agree with the solution offered then it is up to those in the industry to offer a better solution. It is evident that radical changes in methods of production will have to be made if the beef industry is to be able to stand on it sown legs. Science has shown that the young animal is a much more efficient converter of feeding stuffs into meat than is an old one, and in these days of high costs of concentrates, it might well pay the Eastern Countries farmer better to fill his yards with yearlings during their first winter rather than to fatten older bullocks. This book will be great help to farmers, industrialists, consultants, researchers, students, other concerned people and for those who wants to venture in to this field. Contents Chapter 1: Beef Production as a Component of British Farming; Chapter 2: The Development of British Beef Breeds by Robert Bakewell; Chapter 3: Breeding: Variation and its Basis; Chapter 4: Selection; Chapter 5: Methods of Breeding; Chapter 6: Adaptation of Breeding and Strains; Chapter 7: Growth, Development and Body Form in Cattle; Chapter 8: Beef Quality; Chapter 9: Nutrition Scientific Principles; Chapter 10: Nutrition Feeding Standard and their Applications; Chapter 11: Beef from the Dairy Industry; Chapter 12: Fattening of Cattle; Chapter 13: Beef Cattle on Hill and Marginal Land by A G Davis; Chapter 14: Economic Considerations.

At present, more than 630 Krishi Vigyan Kendras(KVKs) working in India have been designed to have vocational training to the practicing farmers, extension personnel and rural youths as well as for all those who want to seek self-employment. The KVK as a grass root level institution has to meet this need, which is so vital for technical literacy and rapid transfer of technology. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra is an organization, which is concerned with social system having several groups of people like; specialists, administrators, technicians, farmers, extension workers, labourers and other beneficiaries. Each group has its own characteristics, attitudes, traditions, values and forms of behaviour. The people for whose benefits, the extension activities are designed may not be readily interested due to multiplicity of factors like; likeness, inhibitions, taboos, suspiciousness, reservations and prejudices. It is, therefore, expected that manager of the K V K should have enough understanding of such social aspects to get best results out of KVKs. The Programme Coordinators have to perform multifold roles of planner, organizer, director, communicator, controller, supervisor, coordinator, leader, human Relation maintainer and decision-maker. It was, therefore, felt necessary to examine existing extension management abilities of Programme Coordinators of the KVKs. For this, present study on extension management abilities of Programme Coordinators of KVK was undertaken with following objectives : 1. To study personal, job related, organizational and socio-psychological characteristics of the Programme Coordinators of KVKs. 2. To measure the managerial ability of Programme Coordinators of KVKs. 3. To find out the relationship between selected independent variables and managerial ability of the Programme Coordinators of KVKs. 4. To estimate the functional relationship between managerial ability and various independent variables. 5. To study the constraints faced by Programme Coordinators of KVKs in the management of different activities of KVKs and seek their suggestions. The present study was carried out in all the eight zones of India, where Krishi Vigyan Kendras are in operation in transfer of technology process.

Conservation biology is concerned with phenomena that affect the maintenance, loss, and restoration of biodiversity and the science of sustaining evolutionary processes that engender genetic, population, species, and ecosystem diversity. The concern stems from estimates suggesting that up to 50% of all species on the planet will disappear within the next 50 years, which has contributed to poverty, starvation, and will reset the course of evolution on this planet. The present book provides an introduction to the Environment Biodiversity and traditional system and is the compilation of various papers contributed by learned community from different part of the World. It is hoped that this work will serve as a supplement for the standardization of Environment and biodiversity conservation. It is also hoped that in the present scenario, when in every part of the world the emphasis is giving on environment this volume will be of immense use, particularly in opening new vistas of the wonderful world of biodiversity. At last but not least we thank all our contributors who have devoted their precious time in contributing their research in the form of papers for this volume. Land degradation is a concept in which the value of bio-physical environment is adversely affected. Land is the basic natural resource that provides habitat and sustenance for living organisms, as well as being a major focus of economic activities. Degradation of land refers to loss of its potential production capability as a result of degradation of soil quality and also its loss for effective use. The functional capabilities of soil deteriorate from activities related to agriculture, forestry, and industry. On the other hand, urban sprawling and infrastructure development cause loss of available land. Natural events such as cyclones and floods cause land loss, and can also deteriorate functional capabilities of soil. The problems of land degradation are prevalent in many forms throughout the country. The book contains all about these problems and solutions.
