Developing countries greatly suffer from the absence of a meaningful science and technology policy for stimulating the process of economic development by appropriate use of the S&T resources. They also lack appropriate human resources with adequate expertise in S&T policy formulation and implementation. In order to correct these imbalances, it is necessary to have consultations between the governments, institutions and industry by taking into account the specific technological needs and resources of each individual country. The decision makers in developing countries should be provided more and better information for the formulation and implementation of S&T polices which would include the data on S&T statistics, human resources devoted to R&D, education of R&D personnel, measurement of technological innovation and S&T outputs like publications, patents, technologies developed and commercialised etc., so that new policies may be formulated and required modifications in the policies if already existing may be made in order to ensure the sustainable growth of the country without compromising on its present resources and keeping it prepared to face the future challenges. This publication reflects an exchange of the views and collectively evolves the ideas and practices to be followed while executing the S&T policy programmes within the developing countries, concerned organisations and agencies through a collection of 19 research papers including country status reports from nine countries. This volume is chiefly based on the discussions and presentations during the International Workshop on Science and Technology Policy for Sustainable Development that was organised in Tehran, Iran during 5-7 January, 2011 jointly by the NAM S&T Centre and the National Research Institute for Science Policy (NRISP), Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran. The information presented herein would hopefully serve as a valuable material not only for the scientists, policy makers and executives, but also for the concerned authorities of the developing countries in taking appropriate policy measures.

Plantation crops have been traditional export earners but their importance declined when industrial and engineering goods become major export products. Interest in them was revived through new technology and marketing methods. Plantation crop development is another way of containing the environmental deterioration caused by the modern agro-systems. Plantation and forestry could go hand in hand and could develop what is called a forestry-plantation system: Plantation development if it is in wasteland, could propagate mixed crop species along with soil conservation and linkage with other sectors thus improving the role of plantation crops. Thous coconut and arecanut are classified as palms, an attempt is made in this study to include them and study some other plantation crops like cashewnut to the development of agricultural and the rural sector in the particular region. The study is divided into two parts- Part I comprising coconut-arecanut and Part II Cashewnut.

    Availability: In stock

The real masters of life on Earth are not humans but nano-organisms and microbes. Microbiology represents the bedrock from which many newer developments in biotechnology have emanated. We humans have many microbial friends such as the bacteria that live within our body and protect us from disease, promote food digestion, produce vitamins and shape the immune system. On the other hand, some of the deadliest diseases are caused by certain viruses which are best considered as nano-organisms. The book aims to briefly describe some of the exciting new discoveries and researches in bacteria, viruses, microalgae, yeasts and other microbes. Some specific topics in the forefront and expanding frontiers of microbiology and nanobiology discussed in this monograph are the human microbiota, horizontal (lateral) gene transfers, infectious diseases, and the organisms concerned with the environmental, energy, pharmaceutical and healthcare dimensions. The monograph is intended to meet the needs of microbiology students, researchers and teachers in colleges, universities, agricultural and medical institutions. Methane recovery from wastewaters through anaerobic treatment is potentially one of the most attractive methods of solving the twin problems of energy production and pollution control in a cost effective manner. Attempts towards the satisfaction of energy needs of mankind in the biosphere warrants substantial external energy subsidies. Therefore, shift in energy-mix towards renewable is now recognised as one of the necessary measures for meeting the energy needs of the future. The anaerobic process is in many ways ideal for waste treatment. It has several significant advantages over other available methods and is almost certainly assured of increased usage in the future. Anaerobic treatment is currently employed at most municipal treatment and also in some industrial sectors. However, inspite of the present significance and large future potential of this process, it has not yet enjoyed the favourable reputation it truly deserves. The primary obstacle has been a lack of fundamental understanding of the process, required both to explain and control the occasional upsets which may occur, and to extend successfully this process to the treatment of wide variety of industrial wastewaters.

The biological action of plant extracts has led epidemiologists to investigate a number of interesting observations in cases of lung, liver, breast and oral cancers. However, the literature pertaining to the role of Trianthema portulacastrum extracts in liver. Cancer is scanty or else in non-existent. The objective of the work incorporated in this book is an outcome of the lacunae in the existing scientific knowledge regarding the possible role of the various fractions of T portulacastrum in hepatocellular carcinogenesis. The chemopreventive efficacy of the plant was tested in a defined experimental carcinogenesis model. The book has been divided into six chapters. The first phase of experimentation was confined to morphometric evaluation of hepatic lesions. In the second phase of experimentation Antioxidant defence enzymes (GSH, GST) and drug metabolizing enzymes (Cyt-P-450 monoxygenase and UDPGT) were assayed in all experimental and control groups to assess the anti-carcinogenic potential of T portulacastrum. Lipid peroxidation cytosolic and microsomal were included in the study. The third phase of experimentation involved histopathological and histochemical evaluation of tissue samples. PAS and reticulin patterns were evaluated. The fourth phase of experimentation was confined to electron microscopic study (TEM) to gain ultrastructural insight into the changes brought about by carcinogen and the ability of the extract to restore the tissue to the normal state. In the fifth phase, genetic parameters such as chromosomal aberrations, G-banding patterns of rats were considered to understand the ability of the extract to combat the genotoxic effect of the carcinogen. The outcome of the incorporated in this book is that T portulacastrum could prevent neoplastic transformation in rat liver by reduction of nodule incidence, reduction of altered foci, alteration of patterns of antioxidant and drug metabolizing enzymes accompanied by diminished lipid peroxidation. Moreover at the histopathological and ultrastructural level the plant could maintain nearly normal tissue architecture. Further it could prevent the advent of neoplasia by limiting chromosomal aberrations without any toxic manifestation.

    Item Code: #9788170350774

Indian Industry has registered phenomenal growth in several spheres during the recent decades, but the scope for much greater performance was restricted by certain considerations such as input shortages, lack of suitable industrial planning, presence of global competition through the multinationals, supply constraints and demand distortions and to a large extent, due to the pervasive phenomenon of capacity underutilization. But for this key factor, the performance profile and the growth rate of Industry could have been even more substantial and greater. This phenomenon itself is attributed to such factors as inadequate planning, undesirable expansions in the production capacities, foreign exchange constraints, energy shortages and lack of modernization matched by appropriate technology transfers, apart from causes specific to industrial regions and industries, including infrastructure bottlenecks. This study critically deals with an overview of industrial policies and performance of medium and major industry in the Indian economy in general through the planning decades and analyses the nature of capacity utilization of a specific region in recent years, so as to suggest measures for improvement.

The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major factor contributing to the success of environmental engineering, and in large measure has accounted for the establishment of a methodology However, realizing the already great complexity of current environmental problems, and understanding that, as times goes on, these issues will become more complex and interrelated, render it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems must be undertaken. Prerequisite to such planning is an understanding of the performance, potential, and limitations of the various methods of pollution abatement available for the environmental engineering. The concepts and engineering methodology presented in this book is a logical step towards combining both the issues for better understanding of the concepts.

  • Towards Safe And Effective Use Of Chemicals In Coastal Aquaculture

    FAO

    Item Code: #9788170354093

    Availability: In stock

Chemicals used within the aquaculture industry are identified and, for each chemical, a brief summary of information is provided, when available, on its intended purpose, scale of application, the aquacultural sectors and geographic locations of principal use and potential impacts on the environment and human health. Environmental issues arising from the properties of aquacultural chemicals are discussed. The use of most chemicals in aquaculture, if carried out properly, can be regarded as wholly beneficial with no attendant adverse environmental effects or increased risks to the health of aquacultural workers. Concerns appear warranted, however, regarding the over-use and misuse of certain chemicals for which proper risk assessments with respect to the marine environment have not been conducted. A further legitimate concern and a barrier to conducting an exhaustive review of these practices is the lack of availability of quantitative data on contemporary chemical use in the aquaculture industry. The viability of contemporary aquaculture is contingent on the use of chemicals. Accordingly, while the overriding consideration should be minimizing the quantities of chemicals applied, most current uses of chemicals are essential. Recognising that chemotherapeutants and pesticides in current use are of varying effectiveness and hazard, recommendations are provided to promote the safe and effective use of chemicals in coastal aquaculture. Governmental authorities, the scientific community and the aquacultural and pharmaceutical industries all have important roles to play to ensure that chemical use is consistent with protection of environmental quality and human health. In particular, mechanisms need to be put in place and enforced for the registration and control of aquacultural chemicals to protect the environment and human health and to ensure the sustainable growth of the aquaculture industry.

Development of the rural areas has been the major focus of growth in the third world countries since long and India is no exception to this. However, owing to varied development approaches the aim of achieving a speedier growth in rural sector has been beset with many a bottleneck. Rural development is basically a micro approach, which has to be entwined with macro objective depending on the micro perspectives. This study dwells on a micro, how different rural development programmes are being financed by the local branches of commercial and cooperative banks, by considering region-wise and sector-wise total deposits, advances, recovery and loan outstanding. Apart from crop cultivation, minor irrigation and land development, the other programmes considered refer to small scale industries and other priority and non-priority sectors. Special emphasis is laid on programmes like IRDP and PMRY whose shares show a very low level, indicating the need for spreading up of assistance in many rural development schemes. Besides, the macro analysis of commercial banks provides their varies levels of performance in terms of several indicators. While the contribution of private banks and foreign banks has been showing a slow growth in this liberalization era, the public sector banks dominate the current banking scenario in the country. However, their performance is subject to fluctuations as and when policy changes are being made and a steady growth pattern in term is yet to be realized in full. Further, some of the efficiency indicators become volatile during some years indicating a greater role for risk management, necessitating both intensification (within the country) and extension (outside the country) with better performance so as to be locally as well globally competitive. This book will be of special interest to bankers and policy makers in delineating the relative contribution of various commercial and cooperative banks at the local level and how branch specification as to the policy prescription and activity will opt for an appropriate matching process between various rural development programmes and institutional build-up process.
