This book embraces nineteen chapters, beginning with reproduction and mechanism of multiplication with the basic informations. The physiology of breeding mechanism and the environment for fish breeding covered the natural breeding of different varieties of fishes. Under the manipulated breeding, the different types of inducement have been described along with mode of selection of parent fishes and breeding techniques adopted in a number of food fishes. Broodstock development, breeding and seed production of selected marine food fishes like, sea bass, silver pompano, cobia, groupers and rabbit fishes have found place in the book. The necessity of breeding in fish culture and hybridization have been advocated. The role of genetics in reproductive biology, breeding for genetic diversity, inheritance and variability, together with reproductive success of hybrids for hybrid vigour, growth, tolerance for stress and disease along with the need of commercial hybridization of carps, sturgeons have been documented in details in the relevant chapters of the book. Importance have also been paid on the genetics of common carp and other food fishes, together with the genetic method of fish selection, different systems of breeding, polyploidy and the methods of artificial selection and gynogenesis of fish for increasing the numerical strength of diploid gynogenetic progeny along with cytological analysis. A separate chapter has been dealt on cytogenetics in fish breeding. The gene transfer technology and production of transgenic fish together with different methods of gene transfer have also been explained in details. The book will be useful to the students, scholars and researchers working in fish breeding and hybridization.

Dr. K.P. Biswas, M.Sc, Ph.D, D.F.Sc. (Bombay), E.F. (West Germany), F.Z.S, F.A.B.S. (Kolkata), took interest in induced fish breeding in 1957 looking at the success of Dr. Hiralal Chaudhuri in Angul Fish farm in Odisha. In 1960, the author succeeded to induce a pair of mrigal (Indian major carp) in Balasore, Odisha by injecting fish pituitary hormone. Thereafter from 1961 onwards he induced a number of Indian major carps for breeding in the field and in controlled temperature in the laboratory. He also succeeded to ovulate female rohu by stimulating pituitary gland electrically with micro electrodes. In 1982, the author, as Director Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Admn., for the first time bred major carps to produce carp seed in Port Blair, Andaman Island. Even after his retirement from Govt. service, he bred major carps in Sagar Island, West Bengal and produced major carp seed locally in 2002. All these practical experiences gave him the impetus to write the book, Breeding and Hybridization of Food Fishes”.
