'Perinatal asphyxia is a major cause of neurological morbidity and mortality in India. Perinatal asphyxia is an insult to the fetus or newborn due to lack of oxygen (hypoxia) and/or lack of perfusion to various organs. In asphyxiated neonates there are many biochemical and hematological variations, many studies in recent past have suggested that an increase number of nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) in umbilical cord blood may be a useful marker to identify birth asphyxia. The placenta is a vital organ responsible for gaseous and nutrition transfer from mother to the fetus as well as disposable of waste products of the fetus. Dr. Mohammad Feroz Alam did his MBBS from J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 2004 and M.D (Pathology) in 2008. Started working in the same Medical College as a Senior Resident in 2008, and is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the D/O Pathology since February 2012.
